Hello, I am Manish Mahato, a DET in L&T ECC who joined in Dec 2023 at the Kolkata office. I have been enjoying my training and learning a lot from my seniors and colleagues. In this blog post, I want to share some tips and insights on how to plan your leaves, holidays and attendance as a trainee in L&T Construction. This is based on my personal experience and observation, and it may vary depending on your location, project and department. So, please take this as a general guide and not as a rule.
Types of Leaves
As a trainee, you are entitled to three types of leaves: casual leave, sick leave, and privilege leave.
Casual Leave: You can take up to 7 days of casual leave in a year, but not more than two days consecutively. You have to inform your Immediate Superior (IS) before taking casual leave.
Sick Leave: You can take up to 7 days of sick leave in a year, but only one day without any medical proof. If you need more than one day of sick leave, you have to submit medical proof of your illness.
Privilege Leave: You can take privilege leave after completing your one-year training period. You will get 23+ days (not sure) of privileged leave per year, which can be carried forward to the next year. However, if you need more than two days of leave before completing your one-year training period, you can take privileged leave in advance, which will be deducted from your future entitlement.

Tips for Planning Your Leaves and Holidays
Now that you know the types of leaves and the holiday list, here are some tips for planning your leaves and holidays as a trainee in L&T Construction:
- Plan ahead and communicate with your IS and team members about your leave plans.
- Try to avoid taking casual leave during peak work periods or deadlines.
- Use your sick leave only when necessary and provide valid medical proof if required.
- Save your privileged leave for longer vacations or emergencies.
- Utilize your optional holidays wisely and choose the events that are important to you or your family.
- Check the holiday list for any changes or updates before applying for leave.
- If you are working at a site, confirm with your site manager about the site-specific holidays and rules.
Attendance in L&T Construction
One of the important aspects of working at L&T is maintaining a good attendance record. The company expects its employees to be punctual and regular in their work. Here are some of the rules and consequences of attendance in L&T:
- The office hours start at 9 am and end at 5:30 pm. Employees have to punch in their attendance at the biometric device when they enter the office.
- Employees are allowed a grace period of 45 minutes per month to cover any late arrivals. For example, if an employee arrives at 9:10 am on a day, 10 minutes will be deducted from their grace period. If an employee arrives at 9:15 am or later, it will be counted as a late arrival.
- If an employee exhausts their grace period and arrives late, they will have to apply for a casual leave (CL) for half a day. If an employee does not have any CLs left, they will have to apply for a loss of pay (LOP) for half a day.
- If an employee is absent without taking or applying for any leave, that day will be declared as LOP. LOP means that the employee will not receive any salary for that day.
- If a trainee has a high number of LOPs in a month, the company may extend their training period or take other disciplinary actions.
The company monitors the attendance of its employees closely and expects them to follow the rules. Attendance is one of the factors that affect the performance appraisal and career growth of employees. Therefore, it is advisable to be punctual and regular in your work and avoid any unnecessary absences or late arrivals.
